Congratulations to ‘Back from the Brink: Saving our Small Blue’, Winners of the Nature of Scotland Community Initiative Award

GreenPower staff and guests were delighted to attend the RSPB Nature of Scotland Awards last night.  The event, this year hosted by Gordon Buchanan and Ewan McIlwraith, is a celebration of the fantastic work being carried out by groups and individuals to help safeguard Scotland’s natural environment.

The Community Initiative Award which GreenPower has sponsored for six years was won by ‘Back from the Brink: Saving our Small Blue’. This project which started in 2012 has involved coastal communities in Angus working together to understand and halt the sharp decline of one of Scotland’s most iconic coastal species – the Small Blue butterfly. This engaging project demonstrates how working together on a common goal can reverse the decline of a species under threat.

Rob Forrest CEO of GreenPower expressed his admiration for all the short-listed community projects and said, “Each year I have been impressed by the dedication of communities to make a difference to the biodiversity in their local area and this year the work to save the Small Blue butterfly shows just what can be achieved.  With the recent declaration of a climate emergency, never has the phrase “Think Global, Act Local” been more appropriate. We all need to continue to work together to tackle climate change and to bring about lasting environmental benefits at both a local and global level.”

‘The Children’s Wood and Meadow Outdoor Community Centre’ received a Highly Commended Award. This is a magical oasis of nature in the heart of Glasgow where children, adults and young people enjoy, play, grow and take time to enjoy nature in a regenerated birch woodland and meadow. The local community successfully campaigned to save this wonderful and important place from development.
